2003-2004 Executive Summary of the Strategic Plan

Idaho Chapter of HFMA

The Chapter received four performance awards and one Yerger award for the 2003-2004 year. We received the Silver Award of Excellence for Certification, the Gold Award of Excellence in Membership Growth and Retention, the Silver Award of Excellence for Education, the C. Henry Hottum Award for Educational Performance Improvement, and a Yerger award for a project HFMA coordinated with Regence Blue Shield of Idaho. Special thanks go out to Michele Marcum for taking the time and effort to write this project up for us and submit it to National.

Our Chapter survey was done by the National HFMA organization this year. The format and questions were a little different than we have done as a Chapter in the past, but the participation in the survey was much higher than in the past (61% versus 12%). This may be because the survey was very easy and it could be completed on-line.

Membership

The Idaho Chapter was one of only 6 chapters in the nation (about 79 total chapters) to be recognized with the Gold Award for Membership Growth and Retention. We have seen a great increase in our new members. Retention of those new members will be a priority for our Chapter. We realize that member satisfaction and involvement in Chapter activities is the key to retaining members. We will focus on these areas.

Educational Opportunities

Our goal as the Chapter leadership is to continue to provide quality educational programming. Our membership has indicated that high quality education adds great value to them. To ensure this continuation of quality education, the Chapter leadership will utilize the survey results and the quarterly program evaluations, which indicate topics that are the highest level of interest to our members.

The topics ranked most important to our membership in the general survey are in the National Interest Category: Regulatory/Legislative Update (62.1%), Billing and Collections (56.9%), Chargemaster (53.4%), Accounting/Financial Reporting (46.6%), Compliance and Legal Issues (46.6%). In the Local Interest Category: Trends and Outlook for Local Healthcare Industry (71.2%), Fiscal Intermediary (67.8%), Medicaid Payment Policies (62.5%). Also, the membership survey results show that the factor that would most improve our HFMA Chapter was Program/Education topics. Most respondents indicated a preference for full-day programs (50.8%). Multi-day programs came in second (39.0%). Education and programming is clearly an area where we need to dedicate our attention and resources.

Participation

Networking and Interaction is also an important part of service to our membership. 84.7% of the survey respondents were either extremely satisfied, very satisfied, or satisfied with networking opportunities within the Chapter. We would like to continue to find ways to motivate our members to become more personally involved in the Chapter.

Chapter Communications

The survey again demonstrated that the membership values the Chapter newsletter, the GemStatement. 91.5% of survey respondents were either extremely satisfied, very satisfied, or satisfied with the newsletter and member communications.

Although the survey did not specifically ask about the Chapter Membership Directory, we feel that this continues to be of value to our members.

In the 2002-2003 Chapter year, we established our own Chapter website at www.idahohfma.org. Only 56.1% of survey respondents indicated they were either extremely satisfied, very satisfied or satisfied with the Chapter website. We believe this is because many members may not be aware of the website.

Chapter Operations

Our Chapter has always experienced a moderate amount of financial success. One of our goals is to achieve consistency from year to year.

Sponsorship

We have seen growth in our sponsorship and have seen more companies express an interest in sponsoring our Chapter. This may be related to our membership growth. It has certainly contributed to our financial success and has enabled the Chapter leadership to bring in some quality speakers for our education sessions. One of our goals is to establish a sponsorship committee.

Quality

It is our Chapter’s belief that quality can never be taken for granted and must be monitored continually. We will continue to utilize results of the membership survey and program evaluations in planning our Chapter activities.

The Board of Directors for the Idaho Chapter of HFMA is very proud of the continued progress the chapter has made. Overall, the positive results from the January 2004 survey gave our chapter leadership the indication that we are producing the overall product that our membership values. It is our goal to include more members, make new members feel at home, and give our members motivation to participate in HFMA activities. As we prepare for a challenging future in healthcare financial management, our goal will be to stay focused on our core mission, communicate clearly, and step forward on issues that will impact our membership.
